Lord Hylton

asked Her Majesty's Government:

How many persons are detained in England and Wales at Her Majesty's Pleasure; how many are held in prisons and how many in other institutions; and whether they will break down the total by age-groups.

Earl Ferrers

Including those recalled following an earlier release on licence, the population of persons detained during Her Majesty's Pleasure in Prison Service establishments in England and Wales on 31st March 1989 was 200, of whom 60 males and three females were aged under 21. On the same date a further six males were detained during Her Majesty's Pleasure in youth treatment centres and community homes. The number of such detainees held in psychiatric hospitals is not recorded centrally.
