HL Deb 22 May 1989 vol 508 cc139-40WA
Lord Kennet

asked Her Majesty's Government:

What assessment they have made of the Guatemalan Government's move to democracy and its determination to remove foreign advisers, reduce its armed forces and stop the destabilisation of neighbouring countries.

Lord Trefgarne

The present Government in Guatemala was elected in 1986 in free and fair elections. New elections are due in 1990. It is our hope that these will mark a further important milestone in the development of democracy in Guatemala.

Guatemala is committed to the Esquipulas and subsequent agreements designed to strengthen democracy and the peaceful resolution of conflicts.
