What is the extent, if any, of overcrowding in Scottish prisons and whether they will list those establishments which were more than 10 per cent. overcrowded at the most recent convenient date.

The overall occupancy level in all Scottish penal establishments on Friday 28th April 1989 was 97.46 per cent. of available capacity. The establishments which had an inmate population which exceeded the number of places available by 10 per cent. or more are listed below.

Establishment Over-Occupancy
Barlinnie Prison 13.37 per cent.
Edinburgh Prison 19.61 per cent.
Inverness Prison 19.74 per cent.
Longriggend Remand Institution 22.73 per cent.
