asked Her Majesty's Government:

What legal qualifications (if any) are required for the holders of the offices of:

  1. (1) Attorney-General of England and Wales;
  2. (2) Solicitor-General of England and Wales;
  3. (3) Lord Advocate.

Lord Fraser of Carmyllie

(1) In order that he may represent the Crown in each of the Queen's Courts in England, Wales and Northern Ireland, the Attorney-General is required to be a member of the Bar of England and Wales.

(2) In order that he may act on behalf of the Attorney-General under the provisions of the Law Officers' Act 1944, the Solicitor-General is required also to be a member of the Bar of England and Wales.

(3) The duties of Lord Advocate include representing he Crown in the Court of Session and the High Court of Justiciary and for these purposes it is requisite that he be a member of the Faculty of Advocates.
