HC Deb 04 May 1989 vol 152 c189W
113. Mr. Dalyell

To ask the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs if he will seek to have rain forest issues and policy on the financing of nuclear power stations included on the agenda of the next meeting of the World Bank.

Mr. Chris Patten

The development committee of the IMF/IBRD has already agreed to discuss environmental issues at its next meeting in September. Meanwhile, the World Bank is intensifying its work on these issues, including its role in the tropical forestry action plan.

The role of nuclear power is considered within the energy development plans of a few IBRD borrowing countries but its cost, high technology and demand on scarce human resources make it generally inappropriate at present for the vast majority of developing countries.
