HC Deb 22 March 1989 vol 149 c650W
Mr. Leighton

To ask the Secretary of State for the Environment what steps are being taken to develop tourism in docklands.

Mr. David Trippier

[holding answer 16 March 1989]: The LDDC fully recognises the tourism potential of docklands. It has responsibility for tourism and leisure, projects to improve information to tourists and the tourism industry, projects to conserve and improve the environment and restore historic buildings, and it is attracting imaginative private sector developments, including proposals likely to bring in visitors. Public transport improvements are also helping.

Mr. Leighton

To ask the Secretary of State for the Environment what tourist facilities are being built into Canary wharf.

Mr. Trippier

[holding answer 16 March 1989]: Canary wharf is planned to include 500,000 sq ft of retailing arid other leisure facilities and extensive public places.
