To ask the Secretary of State for Health what was the increase or decrease in spending on capital programmes between(a) 1975 and 1979 and (b) the last four available years.

Mr. Freeman

The cash expenditure by health authorities in England on capital programmes rose from £331.71 million in 1975–76 to £367.35 million in 1978–79, an increase of 10.7 per cent. over the period. The corresponding figures for 1984–85 to 1987–88 show a rise of 25.9 per cent. from £795.40 million (1984–85) to £1,001.44 million (1987–88).
