HC Deb 10 March 1989 vol 148 c83W
29. Mr. William Powell

To ask the Secretary of State for Energy what proportion of exposure to radiation of the United Kingdom population is received from nuclear reactors.

Mr. Michael Spicer

I understand from the National Radiological Protection Board that the United Kingdom nuclear industry accounts for less than 0.1 per cent. of the average United Kingdom population exposure to ionising radiation. Natural radiation accounts for about 87 per cent. of the average exposure and medical diagnosis and treatment about 12 per cent.
