HC Deb 22 June 1989 vol 155 cc247-8W
Sir Geoffrey Johnson Smith

To ask the Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food (1) if he will ban food stuffs made from scrapie-infected sheep for all fowls, animals and fish following the Southwood report's recommendation of a ban on such feeds for ruminants;

(2) whether only ruminants were being fed with scrapie-infected feed when the Southwood report recommended banning it.

Mr. Donald Thompson

The Southwood working party was aware of the fact that protein derived from ruminants was fed to types of animal other than ruminants, and recognised the fact. The working party endorsed the action that the Government had already taken in banning the feeding of ruminant-based protein in ruminant rations. There are no plans to include feed for other types of animal in this ban.
