HL Deb 25 July 1989 vol 510 cc1421-2WA
Baroness Jeger

asked Her Majesty's Government:

What provision is made in other member states of the EC for assistance to families with children, either through taxation relief or social security benefits.

The Minister of State, Foreign and Commonwealth Office (Lord Brabazon of Tara)

All EC countries give support to families with children either through tax relief or social security benefits. The detailed provisions vary considerably from country to country. Further information about tax provisions can be obtained from the OECD publicationThe Tax/Benefit Position of Production Workers in 1984–87. With regard to social security benefits, I would refer the noble Baroness to the Department of Social Security's publication, Tables of Social Benefit Systems in the European Communities (Position at 1 January 1988).
