HC Deb 21 July 1989 vol 157 c404W
Ms. Gordon

To ask the Secretary of State for the Home Department how many mothers in prison, on remand or convicted for offences unrelated to their children's welfare, have been prevented from exercising their legal child custody rights by local authorities which have put their children into care without informing or consulting their mothers; and if he will make a statement.

Mr. David Mellor

We do not hold this information centrally. It is normal social work practice for all mothers to be informed or consulted about their children being taken into care.
