HL Deb 19 July 1989 vol 510 c904WA
Lord Northfield

asked Her Majesty's Government:

What action they intend to take against the North West Water Authority for exceeding the permitted levels of lindane in discharges of sewage into the River Bollin, and in respect of allegations that it has published incomplete and incorrect results of lindane pollution tests.

The Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State, Department of the Environment (Lord Hesketh)

Action taken by the North West Water Authority has already led the company concerned to make substantial reductions in its discharge of lindane to the River Bollin. As a result, concentrations in the river have fallen by over 90 per cent. since 1985, and are expected to fall below the relevant quality standard this year. The authority has informed my department that results originally submitted for 1988 were incomplete due to an administrative error; this has now been corrected.
