HL Deb 19 July 1989 vol 510 c904WA
Lord Ardwick

asked her Majesty's Government:

What proportion of GNP is spent on health in the United Kingdom, the United States of America, France and the Federal Republic of Germany.

Lord Henley

International comparisons of health expenditure are made on the basis of information collected by the OECD, which uses GDP rather than GNP as the measure of national wealth. The table shows total health expenditure (public and private) in 1986 (the latest year for which OECD figures are available) as a proportion of GDP:

% of GDP spent on health
United Kingdom 6.2
United States of America 11.1
France 8.5
West Germany 8.1
