HL Deb 12 July 1989 vol 510 c405WA
The Earl of Selkirk

asked Her Majesty's Government:

Whether they propose to consent to the application by the Wessex Water Authority for permission to discharge a maximum of 11,236 cubic metres of treated sewage per day into the river Frome between Wool and Wareham, whether clear warning to the public will be displayed on the banks of the river and whether the river commissioner will be consulted.

The Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State, Department of the Environment (Lord Hesketh)

Wessex Water Authority has applied to my right honourable friend the Secretary of State for the Environment for a time-limited consent for the Wool sewage treatment works in accordance with the arrangements set out in the announcement of my honourable friend the Minister for Water on 7th December 1988 (Official Report, col. 199). The application has been advertised. Under Part II of the Control of Pollution Act 1974 there is no statutory duty to consult, but a copy of the application is required to be sent to the local authority in whose area it is proposed the discharge should be made. It is, however, open to other bodies and individuals to submit representations about any application in response to an advertisement.

Any need for the posting of notices is a matter for the water authority to consider.
