To ask the Secretary of State for Transport what measures he proposes to tackle pedestrian road casualties.

In 1988 there were at least 1,750 pedestrian deaths on our roads, and 57,000 other injuries. Tackling these unnecessary accidents is one of my top priorities.

I announced a series of proposals in the document "Pedestrian Safety: New Proposals for Making Walking Safer" on 19 April. Copies have been placed in the Library.
