To ask the Secretary of State for Transport how many British Rail electrification projects the Government have approved since 1979.

Mr. Channon

Since 1979 the Government have approved nine electrification schemes, worth over £600 million in current prices. In addition the Government have approved a package of Channel tunnel-related investment including some £35 million of electrification work. British Rail has itself approved a further 14 smaller schemes.
