To ask the Secretary of State for Education and Science what assessment he has made of the impact upon the educational abilities of children in Nottingham of the closure of hospitals in the Nottingham area; and if he will make a statement.

My right hon. Friend understands that the Nottingham health authority is considering the closure of St. Anne's hospital, to which a special school is attached, and I refer the hon. Member to the reply I gave him on 16 January at column 17. Under the Education Act 1981, it is for the local education authority to consider how it provides for children in its area with special educational needs.
