HL Deb 30 January 1989 vol 503 c978WA
Lord Bethell

asked Her Majesty's Government:

Whether, in view of the Chancellor of the Exchequer's recently expressed view that restrictions on the quantity of goods which individuals can take (tax paid) from one member state of the European Community to another should be substantially and progressively relaxed, they intend to authorise such a substantial relaxation to mark the beginning of 1989.

The Secretary of State for Trade and Industry (Lord Young of Graffham)

The travellers' allowances for goods purchased tax-paid in another Member State of the European Community are provided for under European Community legislation which the United Kingdom cannot vary unilaterally. The Government remains committed to substantial and progressive relaxations in these allowances as part of its market-based approach to 1992 and beyond.
