To ask the Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food if he will make a statement on the incineration of bovine spongiform encephalopathy infected cattle carcases.

Incineration is a safe and effective method of disposing of carcases of cattle suspected of having BSE.

§ 20. Mr. Cousins
To ask the Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food how many cases of bovine spongiform encephalopathy were identified in December 1988; and if he will make a statement.

In December 1988, 339 cases of BSE were confirmed by the laboratory examination of brain tissue.

To ask the Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food what discussions he has had with the British Veterinary Association about the control of bovine spongiform encephalopathy.

Ministry officials have frequent discussions with the British Veterinary Association on a range of topics, including BSE.
