To ask the Secretary of State for Education and Science if he will make a statement about the future of the assessment of performance unit.

Mr. Kenneth Baker

Responsibility for the assessment of performance unit (APU) will be transferred from my Department to the School Examinations and Assessment Council (SEAC) with effect from 1 April 1989. This will allow the APU's programme of work to be closely integrated with SEAC's wider programme of monitoring and evaluation, on which I have invited the council's advice by the end of July.
