HL Deb 14 February 1989 vol 504 c168WA
Lord Kennet

asked Her Majesty's Government:

Whether "the best terms for the taxpayer" which the Government aim to obtain when selling public property take account of the cost to the taxpayer of permanent loss of amenity which may follow from the new owners being "free to manage the business commercially", and if so how that cost is calculated. [Official Report, 16th January, col. 96.]

The Secretary of State for Trade and Industry (Lord Young of Graffham)

Whether or not there is a loss of amenity from land sales subsequent to a privatisation will depend on the operation of normal development and planning laws, not on the terms of that sale.
