To ask the Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food if his Department plans to support the introduction of draft EEC regulations to phase out the variable sheepmeat premium.

In the negotiations on the review of the EC sheepmeat regime, which have made little progress so far, I will be seeking to ensure that the United Kingdom sheep industry can, at reasonable cost, continue to capitalise on its natural advantages and superior efficiency. It is too early to judge which means of support will be most effective in achieving this.
