HL Deb 08 February 1989 vol 503 cc1651-2WA
Lord Kennet

asked Her Majesty's Government:

Whether the Prime Minister has yet renewed the agreements with the new United States President concerning United States nuclear weapons based in the United Kingdom and whether she will now ensure that British sovereignty is to be fully assured.

The Minister of State for Defence Procurement (Lord Trefgarne)

As I told the noble Lord on 5th July 1988 (Official Report, col. 241), the stationing of US forces in the United Kingdom is governed by a number of agreements between the British and US Governments, including the Churchill-Truman understanding of 1952. These agreements remain in force. They will be formally reaffirmed with the new United States Administration in the near future.

Lord Kennet asked

Her Majesty's Government:

Whether their control over United States nuclear ammunition depots in the United Kingdom is similar to their control over United States operational nuclear bases in the United Kingdom.

Lord Trefgarne

The details of the various agreements covering the presence of United States nuclear weapons in the United Kingdom are classified.
