Mr. Alfred Morris

To ask the Secretary of State for Wales how many interpreters for the deaf are employed by public bodies in Wales; how many have been trained in each of the last five years; what action he is taking to increase their numbers; and if he will make a statement.

Mr. Grist

This information is not held centrally. The Department is, however, currently funding a Wales Council for the Deaf project to increase the number of people with advanced qualifications in sign language. The training involved conforms to nationally accepted Council for the Advancement of Communication with Deaf People standards.
