HC Deb 08 February 1989 vol 146 cc719-20W
Mrs. Fyfe

To ask the Secretary of State for Employment what are the reasons for his decision not to introduce legislation to ratify International Labour Organisation convention No. 111 on "Discrimination in Employment and Occupation (1958)".

Mr. Nicholls

The Government believe that their commitment to the elimination of unfair discrimination between one worker and another in employment is already clearly demonstrated by existing legislation, mainly the Race Relations Act 1976 and the Sex Discrimination Act 1975, and consider that the amendments to this legislation that would be required to give further effect to the provisions of convention 111 are unnecessary and undesirable.
