HC Deb 03 February 1989 vol 146 cc425-6W
Mr. Geraint Howells

To ask the Secretary of State for Wales how many full-time hill farmers there are in Wales; what was the corresponding figure 10 years ago; and if he will make a statement.

Mr. Wyn Roberts

In June 1977, there were 9,960 whole-time farmers, partners and working directors on holdings in the original less-favoured area, (now known as the severely disadvantaged area). In June 1987, there were 16,637 whole-time farmers, partners and working directors in the extended LFA, of which 9,902 are estimated to be on land directly comparable to the original LFA.
