HC Deb 03 February 1989 vol 146 c425W
Ms. Quin

To ask the Secretary of State for Wales if he will list all those water supplies in Wales which fail to meet the standards set out in the European Economic Community directives on the safety of drinking water and whether or not these are are the subject of derogations; how and when it is proposed for each of these water supplies to meet the standards laid down; and what the latest estimated cost of complying with the standards is in each case.

Mr. Wyn Roberts

The following sources of supply in Wales, many of which serve populations of less than 1,000, are the subject of derogations under article 9 of the drinking water directive (80/778/EEC):

  • Source
  • Alwen
  • Caerau
  • Carno
  • Crai Reservoir
  • Elan Aquaduct
  • Garret Lwyd
  • Garw Levels
  • Georgetown
  • Lovesgrove Borehole
  • Nantybwch
  • Nantymoel
  • Portis
  • Strata Florida
  • Ystradfellte

Small Sources (serving population of less than 1,000)

  • Afon Cwm-y-Llan
  • Bettws-y-Coed
  • Croesor
  • Cwm Cegr Springs
  • Cwmsymlog
  • Gryn Goch
  • Llanbedr Springs
  • Llanfynydd
  • Llan Penmachno
  • Nantmor
  • Penygoyallt
  • Rhyd
  • Rhyd-Ddu
  • Rhydyronnen
  • Tir-Garwen
  • Upper Wenallt Springs
  • Wern Ddu
The temporary relaxation of the directive's standards does not pose any threat to public health and the Welsh water authority has an ongoing programme of remedial works which should ensure that supplies regularly comply by 1992. The full cost of the programme is still being evaluated.
