HC Deb 02 February 1989 vol 146 c386W
Sir Michael McNair-Wilson

To ask the Secretary of State for the Home Department to what extent remission of prison sentences is based on the severity of the crime.

Mr. Douglas Hogg

Remission may be earned on all prison sentences of more than five days. Those not exceeding a total term of 12 months may be reduced by up to half; longer sentences may be reduced by a third. The maximum amount of remission will, thus, reflect the length of sentence or sentences imposed on a prisoner, which is determined by a number of other factors in addition to the severity of the offence.
