Dr. ThomasTo ask the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs what resolutions on arms control and disarmament were tabled by the United Kingdom at the latest United Nations General Assembly in New York; and what support they received.
§ Mr. WaldegraveThe United Kingdom tabled two resolutions on arms control and disarmament at the First Committee of the United Nations General Assembly in 1989:
- (i) On "Objective Information on Military Matters" (designed to encourage the disclosure of more information about military capabilities and budgets). This resolution was supported by 132 countries; no countries voted against; and 13 abstained.
- (ii) On "Bilateral negotiations" (welcoming progress made in bilateral arms control talks in 1989 and calling for sustained progress in the year ahead); 91 countries voted for the resolution; no countries voted against; and 61 abstained.
