To ask the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs how many people have been refused entry to Hong Kong from the Chinese land border annually for each of the past five years; and what was the daily average figure.

The number of people refused entry into Hong Kong from the Chinese land border for each of the past five years is as follows:

Mr. Maude

The estimated population of Hong Kong in mid-1960 was 3,075,300. In mid-1989 it was 5,713,700.
