HL Deb 05 December 1989 vol 513 cc841-2WA
Lord Rugby

asked Her Majesty's Government:

Whether they will ask the health authority to give publicity to the fact that presbyopia is not a disease of the eyes but is the normal result of ageing.

The Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State, Department of Health (Baroness Hooper)

Presbyopia is a condition affecting the eyes from middle age onwards in which, owing to hardening of crystalline lens, the ability to focus on near objects is gradually lost. We will draw the attention of the Health Education Authority to this condition and will ask the authority to include information about it in all relevant new or reprinted publications.
