HC Deb 11 April 1989 vol 150 cc477-8W
Dr. Thomas

To ask the Secretary of State for Wales what role his Department played in the sales of former Dairy Crest creameries in Wales, closed since 1979.

Mr. Peter Walker

In addition to encouraging bodies such as the Welsh Development Agency and Mid Wales Development actively to seek alternative uses for the plants involved, my Department provided assistance, under section 7 of the Industrial Development Act 1982, to the new owners of the former Dairy Crest creameries at Llangefni, Felinfach and Newcastle Emlyn.

In the case of the creamery at Johnstown, the Welsh Development Agency sought and obtained my Department's approval to offer the new enterprise support under the rural conversion grant scheme.

Dr. Thomas

To ask the Secretary of State for Wales what steps are taken by his Department to ensure that property sold in Wales by publicly-owned companies is sold to the buyer most likely to bring the greatest economic advantages to the area; and if he will make a statement.

Mr. Peter Walker

The Government's policy is that surplus land should be sold promptly at the current best price.
