To ask the Attorney-General how many qualified lawyers are employed by the Crown prosecution service; and how many of these are also qualified as barristers.

The latest figures available were given to the hon. Gentleman in my written answer of 16 March 1989. On 31 December 1988 the Crown prosecution service had 1,539 qualified lawyers in its employment, of whom 549 were barristers.
