To ask the Attorney-General what is his estimate of the costs to the Crown prosecution service of employing barristers in Crown court appeals againt sentence or conviction and committals for sentence in(a) Greater London and (b) Manchester at the latest available year.

Barristers employed by the Crown prosecution service do not have rights of audience in the Crown court. The average fees paid to counsel instructed to appear on behalf of the CPS in such cases for the period 1 April to 31 December 1988, the only period for which such information is available were:

The information given is for the three London Crown prosecution service areas, whose boundaries extend beyond Greater London. Separate figures for Greater London are not available.
