To ask the Secretary of State for Health if he will provide an estimate of the cost of training(a) a state registered nurse, (b) an operating theatre nurse, (c) a speech therapist, (d) a consultant and (e) a junior hospital doctor.

Mr. Mellor

The estimated cost of training a registered general nurse over a three-year course is £14,000. The figure excludes that part of the cost of the trainee's remuneration and other costs estimated to represent the value of the contribution the trainee makes to patient services. The other costs requested are not held centrally.
