HC Deb 31 October 1988 vol 139 c469W
Mr. David Young

To ask the Secretary of State for Education and Science what advice his Department offers to local education authorities about insuring staff and pupils against death or injury arising from sport, cruises and other extra-mural activities.

Mr. Butcher

It is for each local education authority to decide whether to provide insurance cover for its staff or pupils taking part in sport or other out-of-school activities, but there is no general duty for it to do so. Some advice on insurance is given in the Department's safety booklet "Safety in Outdoor Pursuits" and other booklets in the safety series, obtainable from Her Majesty's Stationery Office.
