HC Deb 31 October 1988 vol 139 cc503-4W
Mr. McTaggart

To ask the Secretary of State for Scotland what is his estimate of the number of police sector houses(a) within the area covered by Glasgow district council and (b) for Scotland as a whole which suffer from dampness and require extensive remedial work.

Lord James Douglas-Hamilton

Returns submitted by local authorities indicate that at 31 March 1987, a total of 38,131 local authority dwellings in Scotland required some form of treatment for dampness. Of this total, 16,700 dwellings are located in the area covered by Glasgow district council.

Mr. McTaggart

To ask the Secretary of State for Scotland how many elderly people are living in the private rented sector in Scotland; and how many of these are living in properties which fall below the tolerable standard.

Lord James Douglas-Hamilton

The latest available information is from the 1981 census which indicates that approximately 57,800 people of pensionable age were living in private rented furnished and unfurnished accommodation. It is not possible to identify from the returns how many of the dwellings in which they lived were below the tolerable standard.
