HC Deb 28 October 1988 vol 139 c442W
Sir Michael McNair-Wilson

To ask the Secretary of State for Health how many units specially caring for premature babies have been set up by regional health authorities in England and Wales; and what is the earliest age from which such babies have been known to survive in these units.

Mrs. Currie

All regional health authorities in England and Wales have units at regional, sub-regional or district level for the medical care of the newborn. These units receive premature babies together with others who require special or intensive care.

It has been reported that babies have survived in these units from the 23rd week of gestation.
