HC Deb 27 October 1988 vol 139 c410W
Mr. Amos

To ask the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs what contribution the United Kingdom has made to the United Nations Iran-Iraq military observer group.

Mr. Eggar

As a permanent member of the United Nations Security Council, we have a special responsibility towards financing such operations as the United Nations Iran-Iraq military observer group. Our assessed share of the total cost is 5.9 per cent. or £2,640,000. Of this we have already paid £1,244,440.20 with the balance due in November.

Parliamentary approval for this expenditure will be sought in a winter Supplementary Estimate for the "Foreign and Commonwealth Office: Other External Relations" Vote. Pending that approval, urgent expenditure of £1,244,440.20 has been met by a repayable advance already issued from the contingency fund. The balance will also be met by a repayable advance from the contingency fund.
