Mr. Michael Morris

To ask the Secretary of State for the Home Department (1) what is the size of the grant to INFORM: and for how many years it has been made;

(2) on what terms INFORM receives a Government grant.

Mr. John Patten

A grant of £25,000 was first made to INFORM (Information Network Focus on Religious Movements) for the period 1 October 1987 to 31 March 1988 and a further sum of £45,000 is being paid in 1988–89. It is proposed to give £35,000 and £15,000 in 1989–90 and 1990–91 respectively, subject to review of INFORM's performance. No money will be paid thereafter.

The grant is made to assist INFORM in its work of providing impartial information about cults, by providing a contribution towards its administrative expenses. Conditions relating to accounting and reporting arrangements are attached to the grant.
