To ask the Secretary of State for Transport for how long before and after April 1987 the responsibility for enforcing health and safety legislation, investigating staff accidents and inspecting railway premises on the whole of the British Rail southern region and London Underground was carried out by a sole inspector.

[holding answer 26 October 1988]: From May 1986 up to the present date one inspector under the supervision of a principal inspector and an inspecting officer have been responsible for enforcing the Health and Safety at Work etc. Act on British Rail southern region and London Underground.
