HC Deb 26 October 1988 vol 139 cc219-20W
Mr. Robin Cook

To ask the Secretary of State for Scotland how many nurses in Scotland will be on a lower level of salary than they are at present as a result of the new grading structure.

Mr. Michael Forsyth

None. All nurses will receive a pay award of at least 4 per cent. as from 1 April this year and the range of increase, following implementation of the new clinical grading structure, will be up to 33.6 per cent. or even higher in some cases. Where, exceptionally, an individual's post is regraded to a level which attracts a salary lower than that formerly earned, his or her salary will be protected at the 1 April level, including the 4 per cent. pay rise.

Mr. Robin Cook

To ask the Secretary of State for Scotland if he will list the health boards asked to revise their nurses' clinical grading profiles; and if he will give the reasons why such revisions were asked for.

Mr. Michael Forsyth

No health board has been asked to revise its nurses' clinical grading profile.
