HC Deb 26 October 1988 vol 139 cc291-2W
47. Mr. Devlin

To ask the Chancellor of the Duchy of Lancaster what is his estimate of the extent of overseas investment in the economy of the north-east, and of how many jobs it is supporting there.

Mr. Alan Clark

The latest figures available for capital expenditure by overseas companies for manufacturing activities in north England—which includes Tyne and Wear, Cleveland, Durham, Northumberland and Cumbria—is:

£ million
1983 71.7
1984 106.3
1985 124.6
1986 104.0

In 1986 this supported a total of 35,300 jobs.
