To ask the Secretary of State for Defence if he will set out in theOfficial Report the specific areas of the allocation of funds in the defence budget covered by the phrases "other vessels", "other areas", "other aircraft", "other electronics", "other research and development", "other repair and maintenance" and "other support services" in table 2.3 of the analysis of the defence budget by programme section of the finance and trade chapter in the Statement on the Defence Estimates, 1988, volume 2, Cm. 344–II.

Table 2.3 of volume 2 of the statement attributes expenditure between the main elements of the defence programme. Expenditure which cannot readily be attributed in this way is included under general headings such as "other vessels", which includes, for example, survey ships and HMV Britannia; "other areas" which includes Belize; "other aircraft" which includes Andovers and Devons; "other electronics" which includes navigation and avionic systems; "other R and D" which includes management of R and D, and work undertaken for other Government Departments; "other repair and maintenance" which includes REM E work, and repairs to Her Majesty's ships other than at Devonport or Rosyth; and "other support services" which includes defence attaches, and NATO infrastructure costs.
