Mr. Pawsey

To ask the Secretary of State for Education and Science what was the total cost of teachers' salaries in 1978–79; what it is now; and what is the increase in real terms.

Mrs. Rumbold

In 1978–79, the total cost of salaries1of teachers in maintained nursery, primary, secondary and special schools in England was £2,710 million. The estimate of expenditure on teachers' salaries in the same sectors for 1988–89 is approximately £6,950 million. This represents an increase in real terms 2of nearly 20 per cent.

1. The cost of salaries includes allowances and employers' contributions towards national insurance and superannuation.

2. The 1978–79 cash terms have been converted into 1988–89 real terms using the gross domestic product (market prices) deflator.
