To ask the Secretary of State for Transport how many new road schemes have been financed through collaborative agreements with the private sector since 1979.

The following cost-sharing road schemes agreements have been made with private sector developers:

Information prior to 1986–87 is not readily available.

These schemes include access roads to private developments, provision of roundabouts, widening of junctions and installation of traffic signals. Local highway authorities also enter into agreements with the private sector to finance local road schemes. Some also receive transport supplementary grant.

From transport policy and programme submissions it appears that the following major schemes with private sector contributions (each costing over £1 million) have been started or are planned to start:
