Mr. Wray

To ask the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs (1) when he last discussed with his European counterparts, the United States of America Administration and the Brazilian Government the destruction of the rain forests in the Amazon basin;

(2) if he will list British, European Community and other international initiatives aimed at concerted action to stop the destruction of rain forests in Brazil;

(3) what specific proposals Her Majesty's Government, the European Community and other countries are discussing in order to begin the reforestation of rain forests in Brazil.

Mr. Eggar

I Intend to raise these issues with the Brazilian Government during my visit to Brazil in early November.

We keep in touch with our European Community partners and the US Administration on this matter in the International Tropical Timber Organisation and in other fora. The United Kingdom is a major participant in scientific research on the reafforestation of the Amazon.

The hon. Member may be aware that the Brazilian Government have recently announced an initiative aimed at limiting the destruction of the rain forests.
