HC Deb 24 October 1988 vol 139 cc50-1W
Mr. Wray

To ask the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs when he last discussed the situation of Chile with the Chilean ambassador or other Chilean authorities.

Mr. Eggar

The Chilean ambassador called on me on 11 October to discuss the outcome of the plebiscite. Her Majesty's ambassador in Santiago also remains in frequent contact with the Chilean authorities.

Mr. Wray

To ask the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs when he last discussed with his European counterparts and the United States of America Administration the situation in Chile and the ways in which the opposition in Chile could be further supported in their aims to bring about a civilian and democratic government.

Mr. Eggar

We have continuing contact with our European partners and with the United States Administration on Chile. The 7 October statement by the 12 member states of the European Community, a copy of which is in the Library of the House, describes the commitment of the 12 to the restoration of democracy in Chile.
