HC Deb 24 October 1988 vol 139 cc67-8W
Mr. Marlow

to ask the Secretary of State for Health if he will provide advice as to the extent to which the AIDS virus can be carried and transmitted by mosquitoes(a) within the United Kingdom and (b) in high risk areas overseas.

Mr. Mellor

There is a theoretical possibility that the mouthparts of a mosquito could become contaminated with HIV as a result of feeding on an infected individual. However, expert advice is that the experimental, entomological and epidemiological evidence indicates that the risk of transmission of HIV by mosquitoes is highly improbable. There is no evidence to indicate that such transmission is occurring either in the United Kingdom or overseas.
