Mr. Sean Hughes

To ask the Secretary of State for Education and Science what are the latest available figures for his Department in the London pay area of the number of vacancies by grade and the proportion this is of the grade complement in London.

On 1 October 1988 there were the following vacancies against the formal complement for administrative and support staff in the Department's London divisions. The proportions of the grade complement that this represents are shown in brackets.

To ask the Secretary of State for Education and Science if he will provide the latest available figures for his Department for(a) numbers of staff in receipt of local pay additions, by grade, (b) location of those offices awarding local pay additions and (c) annual cost.

The number of staff by grade awarded local pay additions in my Department is as follows:

The awards are made to those in the above grades working in central London, Croydon and Isleworth. Of the above, one administrative assistant, one personal secretary and four typists are at the Croydon local office and one personal secretary and three typists are at the Isleworth local office. The full-year cost is estimated to be £186,000.
